Style Power !!

By   Priscilla A. Wainwright, Ph.D., CPC

What do you think will happen to the little cat when she gets her tigress stripes painted on?

Clearly she’s working on her style.  My guess is that she will begin in some ways to act differently.  Some of the changes will be subconscious.  She’ll do them without thinking about it.  Her subconscious will detect the change, and improve things automatically.  Other changes will be consciously determined.

Her gait may be more determined.  She will probably walk with greater confidence and presence.  Her purr may come across with more authority.  I’d bet if she walks past a mirror and sees her reflection, she’ll purr to herself, “You rock, Girl”.

Our little cat is being intentional about upgrading her style.  She will look prettier, but that will not be the end of it.  Ideally, she will begin to “live into” her Tigress image.  She will find herself becoming bolder, more positively assertive.

To the degree that she looks like a Tigress, the more likely she is to act like one.  And to the degree that she acts assertively, she will get different, hopefully more positive,  outcomes in her relationships and situations.

Such outcomes will positively reinforce her behavior changes.. Bit by bit, her confidence will build.  As that happens, her self-esteem and sense of self-worth will improve.

One of my girlfriends once quipped. “Women dress their self-esteem.”  I think she’s on target in most cases.

Of course, “style” is a lot more than fashion.  Your “look” is just the beginning.  Your style starts with your outward appearance.  It also involves your gait, habitual  facial and verbal expressions,  how you speak and walk.  In short, your style includes every single aspect of how you present yourself in your world.

Your style also directly impacts how you are treated.  Especially with women, how you dress will directly affect the amount of initial respect you receive from others.
When I go to a mall right after church on Sundays, in my “Sunday best”, I notice that routinely I am approached and fawned over by salespeople, both men and women alike, moreso than the casually dressed women that enter the store right beside me.

Clearly, your outward appearance serves as a marker to others, followed by your behavior.

So, if you want more respect and to feel stronger within yourself, start with an assessment of your style, starting with your appearance.  If you need to, get feedback from trusted friends.  Of course, you will want your style to reflect your authentic self.  I’m not saying you need to “dress up”.  That’s a decision you will need to make for yourself.  Just be more intentional in how you come across.

It does make a difference.  You’ve heard the old line, “Fake it till you make it”.  Amy Cuddy recently altered it: “Fake it till you become it”.  But, the real truth is, that by sharpening up your style, you’re not faking it.  You’re releasing and expressing the inner radiance and glory waiting within!

You Rock, Tigress!!

7 Female-Friendly Ways To Make 2014 Your Best Year Ever

By  Priscilla A. Wainwright,  Ph.D, CPC

Girl, it’s a few days into January.  Has the motivational dust begun to settle yet?  This time of year we get so bombarded with motivational hype.

We make a big deal over New Years.  We make all kinds of promises, we turn over new leaves – and by February 18, they’ve all turned to mush, right?

Well, I’m proposing a SANE, Woman-Friendly way to make this year your best ever.
Here we go!

1.     Forget resolutions and goals.  These tend to be fixed and time-limited.  So often we set them as targets, but we have no specified daily plan to get there.  We too often rely on Dumb-Ass Magical Thinking to make them come true.  So, forget it.

2.     Set powerful Intentions.  Intentions have more to do with your destiny, your direction and path in life.  Rather than say, “I’m going to lose 10 pounds by Valentine’s Day”, and starving yourself, say, “I’m dedicated to improving my physical and mental health”, or words to that effect.

Goals are about Achievement and Accomplishment.  They’re a very Male-Model way of approaching change.  They’re fine to have, and in some endeavors they’re essential.  But for a woman’s personal purposes, Intentions are often better.  Intentions are about Growth and Development.  While goals are time-limited and deadline-oriented, Intentions are Ongoing and Developmental.

Goals push us; Intentions pull us and honor movement at our own pace.  Both, however, have a certain imperative about them, of course, but the imperative of Intentions is female-friendly and honors a woman’s personal style and movement.

3.     Think developmentally.  Honey, we are all “Works In Progress”.  It’s a much saner, female-friendly way of approaching life.

If I really want to scare myself and paralyze action, all I have to do is think of all I “have to” accomplish this year.  Then I pressure myself, worry, and lose sleep.  Want chronic anxiety?  The best way is to live in the future in your head all the time and concern yourself with being/doing perfect.  That’s the recipe for feeling overwhelmed.

Want a cure for overwhelm?  Shift mental gears and just focus on the next step!  Step by step you’ll get there!

“Development” is ongoing and honors each step.  It takes pleasure and satisfaction in the process itself.

I’ve peak-performance coached so many athletes and businesspeople who suspend their satisfaction with practice until the outcome.  If they win or do well, then they let themselves feel satisfaction in the prep work after the fact. The Development mindset lets you feel satisfaction in small, daily gains. It lets you find Joy in the Journey.

4.     Embrace the Larger Truth that the Universe conspires to do you good, that you are loved by the Cosmos, who is waiting for you to happen.  The Universe, as well as your friends, family, and colleagues, - and your Intentions – are the Wind Beneath Your Wings.

Truly, you are a Treasure Trove of talents, capabilities, skills, wisdom, and great qualities.  Your mood is determined by your focus.  Therefore….

5.     Stop criticizing yourself; start complimenting yourself.  Focus on what you have, not what you lack.  Notice how your positive qualities play out in your life.   Take time to stop and appreciate yourself and your true Beauty and Glory.  You are Glorious, Girlfriend.  Act accordingly, whether you see it or not. Your true radiance will shine brighter.

6.     Write out a Power Statement embracing your intentions and the Larger Truth.  Make it strong with emotionally compelling language.  Post it in several places that you frequent often and where you’ll see it, eg., your bathroom mirror, your computer, your kitchen perhaps.  Read it several times daily. Perhaps record it and play it back to yourself.

Here’s an example.  “I am a gifted and inspired writer and coach. The Universe conspires toward my success. I am loved by God(dess) and protected.  I receive just what I need when I need it, and the world longs for what I have to offer.  I manifest wealth in many forms and am wondrously blessed, and am a blessing to others….”  Funny how it works.  The more you think this way, the more the statement comes true, and the more you attract.

7.     Make this your year of greater self-love and respect, Tigress!  Using all the above tips, dedicate yourself to putting you at the head of your list.  Care for and nurture yourself first and foremost.  Only then can you be your best for the ones you love.

This ain’t any ego trip, Girlfriend.  It’s the way to Sister Sanity!  Say “No” more often, set and keep healthy boundaries, and find ways to nurture your self daily.

You will grow, flourish, and your inner Feminine Radiance and Glory will shine forth with much greater glow!

Welcome, Sister, to 2014!

(Psst….  Let’s not forget that we overestimate what we can get done in a day, and underestimate what we can accomplish in a year.  Also, “New Year” is only a time convention.  What’s really happened on January 1 is that we have just gone from one day into the next, just like every day.  So what!  Does that help?)

Tigress Habit # 4 - Harbor No Rage, Take No Crap

By:   Priscilla A. Wainwright, Ph.D., CPC

This is one of the most important Tigress Habits because of its implications.

Central to carrying out this habit is a very critical truth many people fail to recognize, let alone understand.   That truth is that each of us is the co-creator of our experience at all times.

This means that, no matter what happens to us, ultimately we have both responsibility and choice as to how we will interpret the situation and respond.

Suppose, for example, someone does something horrible to us totally without any provocation on our part.    A natural response is to feel hurt, perhaps betrayed, and to feel like a victim.   “They did this awful thing to me.   I’m a victim.   I can’t help my response (or I feel justified in sulking or retaliating).”    This is the “I can’t help it” response.

The well-developed Tigress recognizes that she is capable of choice regarding her response.   She knows that, while she cannot always control what happened to her, she can choose how she will view and cope with the situation.    While having been “victimized”, she can decide not to feel like a victim.    She is free to respond as she wills, including forgiving the perpetrator.    She writes the story she will create in her mind about the event.   We write the story first, then act according to our “script”.

This means that she is free to have an appropriate response, and to let it go and move on, as opposed to dwelling and nursing resentment.  Granted, some situations will lead to hurt, feelings of betrayal, grief, and possibly guilt.  A severe situation will require a period of healing.  But the healing is faster and more complete and empowering when you own your choices.

The key act you can do in order not to have sticky resentments and nursing anger is to “take no crap” in the first place.   By refusing to take crap, and appropriately standing up for and protecting yourself, you are less likely to retain anger.

            Why?

Because you will have met the situation head-on and handled it in a more effective manner.   Thus it will be, in most cases, done with, or at least, minimized.

It is the ones who feel powerless – like a victim – who are most likely to dwell and nurse anger, hurt, or resentment.    Feeling helpless to cope, they seethe.   Such seething cannot only destroy relationships over time, but is dangerous to both your mental and physical health.    The stress of retained anger can weaken your immune system and promote a heart attack or other illness.

By taking no crap and harboring no rage, you are empowered and able to write a story of power and victory rather than one of pain and victimization.   It is very freeing and esteem-boosting to know that you are the author of all your life’s stories.    As author, you determine the story’s outcome.

Taking no crap and harboring no rage opens the door to your power in the face of adversity.   It is a life stance that you take now, and then act upon as difficult situations arise.    Resolving to take no crap and harbor no rage places you into a positive Tigress power center and gives you a direction for action.

Go, Tigress!    Act > Let go > Forgive > Move on > Stay Free!

Tigress Habit # 3 - Positive Assertiveness

By:   Priscilla A. Wainwright, Ph.D., CPC

“She rises up full length and Strength to assert her rights and defend her loved ones.   She owns whatever space she is in and feels totally right to be there.    She respects the rights of others.”

Many people, not just women, are confused by “assertiveness”.    However, women seem to have more trouble with it than men do on a daily basis, especially verbal assertiveness.

There are 3 basic interpersonal stances we can take toward others, both in words and action:  Submissive Aggressive, and Assertive.

Submissive knuckles under, gives in, does not take appropriate action, outwardly agrees when she really doesn’t, sugar-coats to keep peace, allows crap to continue, allows herself  to be walked over, says “I’m sorry” way too often, etc.

Aggressive storms through, bullies, calls names, insults, shames, belittles, gossips behind people’s backs, yells, screams, physically attacks, disrespects others verbally and/or in action, stonewalls, refuses to listen to reason or cooperate when appropriate, criticizes harshly, rebels, makes threats, etc.

Assertive is firm but kind, states her case without belittling, respects the needs, rights and dignity of others, stands up for herself appropriately without fighting unless absolutely necessary, refuses to back down when she’s right, stands her ground, will compromise when appropriate but will not self-sacrifice, etc.

-----------------------------------

In short, Submissive retreats or acts one-down, Aggressive attacks or lords it over, Assertive is firm but respectful and treats others as equals .  Here’s an example:   Husband or boyfriend makes a criticism in a disparaging, belittling way: ”What’s wrong with you?   You burnt the frigging toast for the third time this week!   That’s pretty dumb!”

Submissive:   “I’m sorry.   I’ll try harder next time.”
Aggressive:  “Shut up, Asshole!   Get outta my face.   You don’t like it?   You
            cook from now on.”
Assertive:   “OK, I burnt the toast.   I’ll have to be more careful next time.   But
I don’t like your tone of voice and I don’t appreciate you putting
me down.   I expect to be treated with respect.”

See the difference?   Aggressive goes on the attack; she name-calls and threatens.    Assertive responds to the criticism.   Then tells him not to treat her disrespectfully.   She deals with his behavior, leaving his personhood intact.

Critical to Assertiveness is how you manage anger.

Submissive typically stores it up and builds resentment over time.   She rarely acts it out directly but can become increasingly passive-aggressive.

Aggressive is easily triggered, and has poor boundaries on herself.   She spews and dumps it out.   Yet she will harbor rage in spite of her dumping.

Assertive, by standing her ground, deals with the issue at hand.   By so doing, she is more able to deflect anger.   Therefore she does not carry as much resentment.

This leads to Tigress Habit #4, the topic of my next Blog.    After that we will look at how to develop more positive assertiveness.
